[comp.sys.tandy] 3000 HL Memory Upgrade

kweeder@sunny3.che.clarkson.edu (Jim Kweeder) (02/21/89)

I have a Tandy 3000 HL PC and would like to expand the memory from the
stock 512K to 640K. There are six vacant sockets on the mother board for
the upgrade, my question is what memory chips do I need to use?

Please e-mail any answers and I'll supply the answer to any interested
party.

Thanks,

According to my Tandy Computer Catalogue, the Tandy 128k Parity Memory Kit
is CAT.# 25-4082 and it is listed at costing $79.95.

It also includes the instructions on how to put the chips in and what
jumpers to set to make it work, etc. I think it even includes a little
jumper that you use to enable the memory in the machine.

Basically, it has four 64kx4 bit chips and two 64kx1 bit chips.
All the chips are 150 ns or better in propagation delay speed. When I last
checked PC WEEK magazine, the 64kx4 chips were going for around $14.00 each
and the 64kx1 chips were going for around $4.00 each. This works out to be
$64.00 plus handling and shipping, tax, etc.

But there is a catch. There are basically two categories of chips around.
One type does memory refresh using CAS before RAS and the other needs
RAS before CAS. They are not interchangeable as to types. If you order
the wrong type of chips, they won't work. So if you order via mail order
or other method you may get the wrong chips. It is difficult to tell you
which type does what as both kinds of chips tend to use very similar
part number designations. The mail order firms may or may not be able to
send the correct ones, it depends on how knowledgable the order clerks
   are.

Considering the aggravation of it all it probably isn't worth the effort
to mail order them, and then find out whether they work or don't work.
Most of the mail order firms do not exchange or refund electronic component
   parts.

   I hope this helps.

"You were in the Clone Wars!", said Luke excitedly.
"Yes", replied Obi Wan, "I was a DOS programmer. But that was before the dark
 times, before OS2."
