[comp.sys.tandy] Info on VolksWriter Scientific

bevans@jarthur.Claremont.EDU (Brian Evans) (03/02/89)

I need some info on VolksWriter Scientific. I am a mathematics student
and I am writing a mathematical paper for my Senior Research Project
(makes sense). Anyway, I am using Lotus Manuscript and a Tandy DMP 130
(didn't know they still existed, eh? ;-) and it is not providing all
of the fonts that I would like (oh, what I wouldn't give for a laser
printer!) I would love to be able to use TeX or LaTeX but I fear they
would have the same problem when dealing with the DMP. My question
boils down to this: How does VolksWriter Scientific work with a DMP 130?
None of the dealers are willing to order a copy for me to test and there
are no demo disks of it.

What I need out of it that I don't get from Manuscript:

Ability to do italics within text (unavailable in Manuscript with DMP 130)
Ability to do equations within text (possible but it doesn't look right)
True printing of fonts greater than 10 pts high (unavailable with DMP 130)
Ability to create a glossary

What I also need but DO get in Manuscript:

Boldface
Indexing
Footnoting/Endnoting
Automatic Table of Contents/Table of Figures/Table of Tables
Columns
Mathematical Equations
Spell Check
Intelligent Pagination
Preview of Final Output (I do NOT want WYSIWYG. That alone is enough for
me to not get VW. I need something that will
                         correctly format equations.)

Anybody out there who can help?

I don't know how much VW Scientific costs, but if you've already got
Manuscript, you might be better off buying/leasing a different printer...
