[comp.sys.tandy] Tandy Serial Mouses ??

cac@druco.ATT.COM (Curtis A. Conkey) (03/07/89)

I'm looking at getting a Desktop Publishing Program and found
that I need a serial mouse. In looking around I've found a
wide range in prices with little explanation of what I'm getting
(or lossing) by going with one versus another.
For instance, Tandy sells a Tandy Serial Mouse for 49.95 (39.95
from another dealer) and a LogiMouse for 99.95. I've also
seen a serial mouse from CompuAdd for $79.00. Then there is the
Microsoft mouse for $100.00+.
What am I missing with the Tandy Serial Mouse (if anything)?

I have used all three, the Tandy Mouse, the Logitech, and the Microsoft, both
bus and serial. Except for a 'slightly' heavier button push, the Tandy is
every bit as good a mouse as the others. All you need is a serial port,
preferably 9 pin male, or adaptors, and the Microsoft Mouse drivers that
come with Tandy (or anyone elses') Dos. It's a great value. It makes you
wonder how some of the others can be so high.

The Tandy serial mouse is, for all practical purposes, the same as a
Microsoft Serial Mouse. What you don't get with the Tandy mouse is
a software diskette (containing mouse drivers), and a manual delineating
all the neat Bios style mouse function calls.

Tandy puts the serial mouse driver on their DOS diskettes that they sell
for their machines. Most other companies, generally offer or provide their
own serial mouse drivers too. Microsoft Windows provides it's own mouse
drivers with the package. OS2 does the same also. Not all the companies
do this, but most of them do have drivers for the mice.

The Tandy serial mouse is compatible with the Microsoft version, thus you
can pick the Microsoft Mouse Option when your installing a particular
program package and it'll work fine.

"You were in the Clone Wars!", said Luke excitedly.
"Yes", replied Obi Wan, "I was a DOS programmer. But that was before the dark
 times, before OS2."

What you're not getting with a $49 Tandy Serial Mouse that you do get with
the $99 Logitech Serial Mouse is a $99 dollar mouse for $49.

I have used both the Tandy and the Logitech mice in question, and there is
a definite difference in the "feel" of the two. Most people I know prefer
the Logitech "feel', myself included.

The Tandy mouse works just fine, but that $49 price isn't due to magnanimous
charity on Tandy's part. The mouse "buttons" are of the low cost to construct
variety, and after extended use it becomes diffcult to "click" versus
"double click" versus "hold".

Then again at the price you can use it till you're tired of it, throw it away,
and buy another.

This is definitely a subjective sort of area, like preference for keyboard
"feel", and whether the extra bucks are beyond your current financial limits.
