[comp.sys.tandy] Tandy 1400LT

gklimes@gmu90x.UUCP (George Klimes) (05/26/89)

I just noticed that the Tandy 1400LT has gone on sale for $999. Is Tandy
going to discontinue this model?

reyn@trsvax.UUCP (05/26/89)

Regarding the new pricing on the 1400LT ...

The flyer I got lists the 1400 at $999, but the internal hard disk at
(GASP) $1199.00.

At this price I'm really tempted to get a 1400 for myself, but that's a
rather hefty sum for a 20 meg hard drive. Has anyone out there heard of a
more reasonably priced hard drive for laptops that might be compatible?

As for the model being discontinued, $999.00 is more in line with the price
everybody else's laptops sell for. Tandy has announced that it will be
making laptops in Fut Wuth for Panasonic and itself, so I'm sure Tandy
isn't abandoning the laptop market.

As usual, the above opinions are those of an individual who wishes all
computer hardware was free.

I recently called "Perry Computing" at 1-800-248-3823, who had
advertised the 20 Meg drive (same one as sold in RS catalogs) for
$775. They said that "about 50%" were returned due to unreliability
and that they were investigating other sources for a replacement drive.
I haven't called them back yet.

That's it for now!

As far as I know, the 20 meg hard drive for the 1400LT is on sale
(unadvertised) for around $700. I can't figure out why they didn't
advertise it though.

I have seen a company that advertises in the Computer Shopper. I *think*
it's called Microsense, in La Jolla, CA. They advertise a 20 MB for
the 1400 LT for about $800. Don't know the make.

I was intrigued by an ad i saw recently (Bay Area Computer Currents)
for Toshiba MK-130FA series HDs. 3.5", 53MB!! $445. Does anyone know
if these will work in a 1400 LT. They claim that the drives are compatible
with the standard ST506/412 interface. Is this what the 720K floppies in
the 1400 LT use (somehow I doubt it)?

How do these laptops (esp. the 1400LT) work w/r/to additional
boards? Do they have a modem in them already (Hopefully!)?
How would another (hard) drive be hooked on or in?

Obviously a novice, EMail gratefully welcomed...

I am posting this again in hopes that I might get a reply. Is there anyone?????
out there that owns or uses a Tandy 1400LT??? I am interested in any tips, tricks, advice on the use of this. Also am looking for a list of software that
will/won't work with the machine. I just had to have over $200 worth of work
done on it to get the serial port working......good thing it was covered under
warranty. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Tandy 1400LT that I bought in Feb 1989. I also bought the 1200
baud modem option, so that I can use it as well as/instead of the serial
port. I have been very happy with the machine since I got it. I'm
considering getting the 20M hard drive upgrade for it.
I primarily use the machine to (1) write letters which I print on the
printer and mail, and (2) do email to work (using UUPC software) either
from home or when on business trips.
I do my editing with a PC version of vi. I do serial comm either using
UUPC or Procomm or a simple Intel virtual terminal program. I have done
all of these to both the modem and serial port. You have to go through
the Ctrl-Alt-Ins setup program to choose which one.
If you have any particular problems, questions, or requests for software
where I might be able to help, let me know.
