[comp.sys.tandy] Tandy 6000 Questions

I just recently purchased a used Tandy 6000 and had two questions:

  - The XEN*X manual says if the 'shutdown' command to warn other
users of the impending shutdown in XX minutes and the computer
will then shut itself down. The manual also notes the use of
          sync; /etc/haltsys
to shut the system down. If I use 'shutdown', do I need to use
    other command?

  - The version of XEN*X I am using is 3.02. Can anyone recommend a
XEN*X or UN*X reference book for this version? The 'currect'
Microsoft books seem geared twards XEN*X 3.2 on PC's.

                                        Thanks!

No. Shutdown does a `safe' shutdown of the system. "sync; haltsys" is
only recomended for emergencies. Shutdown (optionally) warns the users
of impending doom, then disables logins, kills all the running processes
that it can; then unmounting any mounted filesystems. Finally, it runs
/etc/haltsys. The new shutdown (3.2's) has a `-q' option, which means
"bring it down NOW, don't warn the users". It's fairly quick now.

Hmmm. Not right off the bat, no. The UNIX that this XENIX is based off
of is UNIX System III, though, and as such is closer to UNIX V than v7
or Berkeley. Hope that helps.

The other thing I should mention is that you get a complete manual set
if you purchase the 3.0 development system. There is only an upgrade
kit for 3.2 (comes with diskettes and replacement manual pages). I'll
bet there are a few Radio Shack stores that would be more than happy to
get rid of any they might have. You may have to call around, though.

uh,clem over the cube wall here also recommends the following book
(I'd forgotten about this one, it's pretty good):

A User Guide to the UNIX(tm) System
	ISBN 0-931988-71-3
	OSBORNE/McGraw-Hill
	630 Bancroft Way
	Berkeley, CA 94710

The cover says the book is "System III compatible", and it pretty much
is. You might be able to find this book at a larger bookstore or at a
technical bookstore.

Have fun, and if you have any further questions, send me mail!
