[comp.sys.tandy] Toasted Model IV

wcf@psuhcx.psu.edu (Bill Fenner) (10/19/89)

While attempting to install a serial card in my Model IV, I seem to have quite
heavily fried something. (yes, Charles, I screwed up.) I just get random
video when I turn it on. If I hook up the floppy controller, it fast-steps to
and beyond track 40, making the worst noise you've ever heard in your whole
entire life. :-)

Anyway, if you have any suggestions other than to take it to Radio Shack, I'd
be glad to hear them.

If not, anyone need a Model III serial card? Anyone need a floppy expansion
kit for their III/IV? New keyboard, maybe?

  Bill

I think Bill was joking, but this reminds me: I need a Model 4 keyboard.
Mine has been disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled so many times that
I don't think it would help to do it again, and some keys barely work.
I do insist on the "old style" arrow key placement. Does anyone know if
these are still available from Tandy National Parts? Does anyone have
one they don't want?

Actually, I wasn't. Drop me a line in a few weeks and ask me if I've gotten
it fixed yet. If not, I'd be glad to sell it to you. It is the old-style
arrows, just like you want.

G'Day! I couldn't quite believe my eyes when I read someone actually mention
the model III. Therefore, I think that you are the correct person to ask.

Do you have _any_ idea where I can get decent mod III disks? You see, I just
recently picked up a III at a campus surplus sale the other day. A bit of
hardware fiddling got the machine to boot up to ROM, but it hates disks (it
is a two drive 48k model). The disks are pretty chewed up, and I'm not sure
if it is my drives of the disks that are bad. But TRSDOS, FORTRAN, Visicalc,
and Scriptsit all absolutely refuse to load. Sometimes the machine gets
caught in a loop, other times it won't recognize the disk, and still others
if acts almost OK.... and then spins off into never never land.

Any possible help?!

Thanks,
-Andrew. ("adf@watcsc.uwaterloo.edu")

While I am very fond of Model III computers, some of the Tandon Disk drives is
the ones I have owned are very hard to keep in alignment. I has gotten so bad
that I am parting out my last Mod III instead of fixing the drives again (does
anyone want a spare motherboard :^) If you would like I can send you a disk to
try out and you can see if it is a problem due to damaged disks or if it is the
drive. I will warn you that if you put new disk drives in the computer, some
brands will work and others will not with TRS-DOS (though NEW-DOS seemed
more tollerant).

Misosys, Inc. sells LDOS 5.3 for the Model III, as well as scads of other
great TRS-80 software. Their order line (orders ONLY!) is 1-800-MISOSYS.

If you have questions, you need to call their support line, which is
1-703-450-4181.
