A pesky problem with my Model 16 has prompted me to purchase a replacement machine I saw advertised on the net. It would be nice to get the old model 16 running so I wouldn't just have a hulk to gather dust around the house. I feel sorry for the amount of hair that the local Radio Shack service people have lost in the machine's 2 previous visits to their shop, so I appeal to the collective wisdom of the net for some advice on solving this problem. The system fails with "BugHlt 68K crashed" after a couple of hours of operation under Xenix 3.2. The failure will not occur if the machine is just powered up and left alone running a memory intensive program. Disk activity is apparently involved, or at least process swapping, implying that all system memory needs to be exercised and I/O needs to be going on too. In the most recent visit to the repair shop, the power supply was replaced and the technician gave me a hard disk cable he said was in better shape than mine. The screen image no longer changes in size, so replacing the power supply was a good idea. It now takes several hours for the system to crash instead of just 1 hour, which is probably why the technician thought he'd fixed the system. Also, before the last visit, the system would spit out lots of errors like "illegal instruction" or "bus error" when running solid Xenix commands like ls just before it died. Now the Z80 simply detects 68K death, with no dying gasps from Xenix. Thank you for any advice you may offer. ____________ Roger Droz UUCP: uw-beaver!gtisqr!roger () () Maverick MICRoSystems / Global Technology International (_______) Mukilteo, WA ( ) | | Disclaimer: "We're all mavericks here: | | Each of us has our own opinions, (___) and the company has yet different ones!"
