Hi folks, I am new to this newsgroup. I have a TRS-80 model IV with 64K RAM running TRSDOS 6, which I love. I have a few questions I hope someone out there can answer: 1. Are there any anonymous FTP sites for TRS-80 software? Specifically, I am looking for a good assembler. 2. Are there any good third party distributers of TRS-80 hardware? Specifically I'm looking for a hard disk and more RAM. 3. Is it possible to add a battery backed-up clock to the model IV? Thanks for any information you can provide me. There used to be a TRS-80 section via ftp at xanth.cs.odu.edu, but the computer there crashed at some point and they don't seem to have put any of the TRS-80 stuff back up. Actually, I've never seen a "good" public domain assembler. You'd be better off checking the commercial markets. Just looking through the ads of Computer News 80, it looks like David Goben has written an editor/assembler for $49.95 + $4.00 S&H (U.S. Dollars). If you're interested in that, send mail to the Computer News 80 address below. If you have the Series I Editor/Assembler for the Model I/III (Disk version) marketed by Radio Shack, there's an article in some 80 Micro or another telling you how to convert it to the Model 4. And, you might want to call Misosys at (703) 450-4181 to see what kinds of deals they have. >2. Also stay away from Texas Instruments 4164 chips, which are 256 refresh cycle (the Model 4 requires 128 refresh cycle). Computer News 80 will send you a proper set for $12.95 plus $4 S&H. >3. Is it possible to add a battery backed-up clock to the model IV? Yes! I believe certain kits (hard drives, too?) come with a clock built in. If all you want is a clock with no extras, there's a company called Storage Power which markets a battery-backed clock known as TIMCLOCK. Call them in the daytime at (714) 952-2700 for more details, or log on to their BBS at (714) 952-8666 for more information. You will probably want to subscribe to some of the magazines still out for the TRS-80. One is TRSLINK, which is a free electronic magazine available on many (if not all) TRS-80 BBS's. TRSTimes is a bimonthly magazine containing TRS-80 programming information and other articles of interest to TRS-80 users, for $18/year. Computer News 80 is a magazine devoted mostly to the TRS-80 _user_, as opposed to the programmer, but it has a lot of advertisers, so you can find many of the companies which still support the TRS-80. It's subscription rates are $24/year bulk rate, or $33/year first class, monthly. For TRSTimes and Computer News 80, you can probably request a sample issue for $4.00. Here are the addresses: TRSTimes 5721 Topanga Canyon Blvd., Suite 4 Woodland Hills, CA 91367 U.S.A. Computer News 80 P.O. Box 680 Casper, Wyoming 82602-0680 U.S.A.
