[comp.sys.tandy] TANDY WP-2 QUESTIONS

gperkins@cdp.UUCP (12/13/90)

Some questions on the WP-2 :

  1) What are the specifications on the internal 32K RAM chip?
$50 at Radio Shack is way too much, but the manual doesn't
specify a speed or a part number so I could get a cheaper
     source.

  2) I glanced at the manual at a store - does the internal
RAM chip socket hold a larger chip than 32K? I thought
the installation picture showed a larger socket.

  3) What phone number is available to order service manuals?

I can't help with the specs except one major: they are VERY low power
RAMs. They always have power to them and must be as low power as
possible. I haven't seen any 3rd party offerings yet, but I'm sure it
won't be long before somebody comes along.

The 32k chip fits the socket exactly, I've heard of no other size,
however, as with the 100's if we keep selling a lot of WP-2's someone
will find a way to really boost memory capacity.

You cannot order them yourself, they must be ordered by a store from
National Parts. It takes about a week or two to receive it after
ordering. Most stores will require payment in advance or at least a
deposit.

Forget 3rd party - buy the CMOS RAMs from a supply house. It's
a standard low power CMOS 32K RAM (nothing special about it at all-
I checked v.s. other similary low power 32K static rams). I got
mine for less than $8.

No. The 32K fits the lower pins - there are 2 or 4 pins (I can't
quite remember) at the top which are not used. I'm not sure if they
are WIRED on the board, though. It appears not. Like they put
a 'standard arbitrary EPROM socket' on the board, even though
they wired it for EPROM-pin-compatable RAMS of 32K or less only.

Has anyone been able to obtain manuals that make programming possible
for the WP2? I have talked with a half dozen people at Tandy, and
noone will help because I can't promise to sell thousands of units.
This is the first I've heard of sevice manuals available - do they
contain programming information, such as ROM routines or LCD access?
I'm not afraid of assembly language programming. WP2 is superior
hardware, but the software doesn't make it for me. All I want is
sensible editor and bigger characters.

Boy is my face red! I checked at the store and learned once again not
to trust my memory.
Sorry for the bad info people. And to think I hadn't made a mistake in
20 minutes!

That's a tough one! I once tried to get docs for Deskmate programming.
Being an employee didn't help, actually I think it lessened my chances.

Most Tech Ref manuals DO NOT contain programming info, but I haven't
seen one for the WP-2. Several people on the net have inquired about
it, so if anyone has gotten one they might be able to shed some light.
It's too bad that Tandy won't help, I think they should provide you with
the info, even if they do charge a little for copying fees or whatever.

Did you speak with someone in Ft. Worth? Often, more can be
accomplished with them through the mail (US). Especially middle mgt and
up because of the numbers of calls they recieve daily. I hope you can
get the info you are seeking and I think WE should provide it.
