[comp.sys.tandy] Need info on a Tandy 1000TX

andrem@pyrman2.pyramid.com (Andre Molyneux) (12/28/90)

I've just gotten my hands on a Tandy 1000TX that is seriously in need of an
upgrade, and thought that this newsgroup would be the best place to ask.

I have a number of questions:

1) Although it has an 80286, I have been told that due to the machine's
design what I have is essentially an XT clone, not an AT. Is this correct?

2) What is the memory capacity of this machine? I think it currently has
   either 640 (or 728????) K.

3) The machine has five slots in it, but the manual gives no information about
them. Are these standard slots, Tandy-specific slots, or some combination
   of the two.

4) With regards to question number 3, what are my hard disk options? I went
to a local Radio Shack and looked through their computer catalog, and found
that the only thing they list as compatible with this machine is a 20MB
hard card retailing for $400. If I can buy a third-party controller and
drive, can I fit the drive in the cabinet (it currently has both 3 1/2"
   and 5 1/4" floppy drives).

5) Again with regards to question number 3, what are my graphics options.
According to the manual, the built-in graphics adapter on this puppy is
CGA? Can I get a VGA card for it?

6) The machine has a serial port (I think the connector has 9 pins) on the
back? Is this an RS-232 type port? I am interested in hooking up a TNC
for Amateur Radio packet communications. By the way, does anyone know
how well protected this computer is against strong RF sources (such as
   a VHF radio) nearby?

Thanks in advance for any information you can provide. I just discovered
this newsgroup this morning, and there seem to be a number of knowledgeable
people subscribing to it. Hopefully some of you can help me get this puppy
up and running soon. By the way, are there any good magazines I could look
to for information?

For those who are looking for something to flame, I am typing these words on
a Macintosh SE/30, which I am using as a terminal to access a large commercial
UNIX machine! ;-) (And no, I don't use the Mac strictly as a dumb terminal!)
