[comp.sys.tandy] System speedup on the Tandy 1000 TL using 120 or 100 ns RAM...

demoydk@iitmax.IIT.EDU ("Tommy" Kim) (01/02/91)

Greetings. I have posted articles on the ungrading of the Tandy 1000 TL
as far as system speed is concerned. All help and advise is greatly
appreciated. Here is a series of hints and stuff:

1) RAM chip changes are in two categories:
   a) Using 100ns RAM chips (41256) will speed up the system.
   b) Using 100ns RAM chips will not speed up the system since its the
system oscillator which runs at about 24 Mhz should be changed to
about 30 Mhz if any changes in performance is to occur.

2) Several non-Paradise cards have been said to work, namely the
EGA card from Everex and the ATI VGA wonder. If there's any problem,
   its a minor problem.

3) Using the Sota Express/386 MIGHT work since the pin type of the 80286
'holder' is to be considered about. Also, I personally have a doubt
since I called Elek-Tek and they said it won't work; also, I called Sota,
and they were not sure; and finally, Sota gave me a number for the place
that 'manufactured' the item (I may be wrong, but they gave me a number
anyhow), and they are not even sure as well.

In any case, these are the results which still leave me rather baffled about
upgrading my system.

But allow me to ask one more thing...

Is there anybody who has a WORKING version of the Tandy 1000 TL with
at least a 20 % increase in performace (CPU intensive)...I don't care if
its the memory change or its the CPU transplant.

One more thing...

Does anyone have the facts for the EEPROM registers? I used SETUPTL.COM
with the /B parameter...what the hell is the blank part in the last 18
lines of registers (actually the last block of registers to the right).

Please...some answers...

And thank you for your most gracious support!
