[comp.sys.tandy] Tandy 1000 BIOS Upgrade PROBLEMS

scoop@aplcomm.JHUAPL.EDU (Cooper Steve S2F x3560) (06/05/91)

Hi,

I posted a while ago asking about whether I needed to upgrade the
BIOS from 1.00 in my Tandy 1000, and the reply from the net was a resounding
YES!. Now I have attempted this, and I am having some trouble.

I was told that the new BIOS (I got 1.1) simply replaces the ROM in
board location U10 on the motherboard. I tried this, and the machine partially
booted. It got to the point of printing the BIOS message from the ROMs on
my hard drive card, but never seemed to access the new motherboard BIOS.
I then tried putting the BIOS in for U09, then tryng them in both slots
without the other ROM chips. Nothing worked.

So my question now is what's wrong? Am I being misled that it's a
simple ROM-for-ROM replacement? I recall being told a while ago by another
Radio Shack person that it wasn't a simple 1-for-1 replacement. So, could
some one (any one?) out there pass along some instructions as to the actual
steps that are necessary in replacing these BIOS ROMs? Incidentally, the
computer in question is an old Tandy 1000, the hard drive is from Hard
Drive Specialist, and I am running a PCT 286 board in it.

			Thanks in advance,

					-Steve

If you ordered the rev 1.01 BIOS from Tandy Nat'l Parts, and you told them
it was an upgrade for the rev 1.00, they would have sent you the BIOS ROM
and a PAL. The BIOS will not function properly without this new PAL.

Perhaps you ordered just the ROM. I did this upgrade to my sons Tandy 1000,
and it now boots and runs a hard disk fine.

Good luck with your project.....
