Expires: Sender: Followup-To: i am considering using the integral as my primary office machine but am reluctant to do so because of the many facilities in hp-ux that are not 'supported' on it (e.g. cdb/fdb/pdb, bs, cron and many of the programs that depend on it). is there a hard reason why an ipc with a large disk drive (maybe a 7958 or 7936) and many of the utilities from hp-ux 2.3 would not be a workable system? mips and disk access times are not the major concern, here. rather, the motivation is to use the ipc in the office as the secondary, local cruncher, primary terminal/communications node, and take-home machine. isn't it possible to get around the obvious directory dependencies by using chroot for specific utilities? i've verified that some of the utilities from hp-ux 2.3 work fine in this manner by taking chroot from hp-ux 2.3 and trying it on the integral. i've tried a few times now to get answers to this general question without success. i'm hoping that some of the people who are familiar with the ipc may be able to shed some non-proprietary light on it. wouldn't it increase the appeal of the integral if it had some of these facilities that many of us rely on heavily (e.g. system polling for uucp depends on cron invoking uudemon.hr, etc.)? any information would be greatly appreciated. ======================================================================= s cowles att: +1 415 423 0929 lawrence livermore national lab uucp: {seismo,ihnp4,gatech}! environmental sciences division lll-lcc!scowles p. o. box 5507 arpa: scowles@lll-lcc.arpa L-524 bitnet: scowles%lll-lcc.arpa@ livermore, california 94550 wiscvm.bitnet
