[comp.sys.hp] smalltalk bytecode usage

chungk@ecf.UUCP (10/28/87)

I am doing a project which involves analyzing typical usage of the
Smalltalk bytecodes. There is a class called Benchmark in PS, but
the only useful benchmarks are in the protocol 'macro operations'.
The benchmarks there include invocations of the compiler, decompiler,
browser, etc. Has anybody out there ever analyzed what mix of macro
operations a typical user session involves?

There was mention of 'a general collection of tasks' called the 'basic
test' in an article called 'The Analysis of the Smalltalk-80 System at
Hewlett-Packard' by Joseph R. Falcone in the green book (Bits of History
Words of Advice). His work was done at the Computer Research Centre,
H-P Labs, Palo Alto, Ca. I would be very grateful if anyone can help
me get my hands on the 'basic test' or tell me how to contact J.R. Falcone
or anyone at the H-P Labs in Palo Alto.
