[comp.sys.hp] Programming languages and tools for HP3000 under MPE V, any

Mike_W_Ryan@cup.portal.com (12/27/87)

Now, now lets not be too harsh on HP. It's not all bad. I have found that
a great place to find third party languages and tools is the magezine
"Interact" which is the INTEREX users group puplication. You should
be getting it as well as the SSB's, Responce Center Q & A's, and Application
notes, if you have software support.

Some tools are quite good and cut development time down drastically, though
some of them tend to be CPU hogs as a result (can't have everything).

+ Yes we have sw support, but I haven't seen anything of those things above.

The INTERACT magezine, as noted, is a publication of the INTEREX users group.
I was under the assumtion that any account with primary software support
(even Responce Center Support) get the SSB, magezine, etc.). When I get back
to the office on Monday, I will look into it for you and advise. It may be
that SOMEONE in your office gets this stuff, butit misses you somehow. Usually,
the one who gets the stuff is the one listed as the system manager or primary
contact for PICS calls at the Responce Center.

As far as support goes, the mazezine is supplied as a service, and is not
supported by HP , nor are any articles written therein supported. It is
a USERs GROUP puplication. You will find many other vendors listed, and
some articles have been sharply critical of HP, but personally I find
it a fine publicaion.

The RC Q & A's, the SSB's, and Application notes however, ARE official
MPE documents and ARE supported.

Look for the documents at your office, and I will check into the
mechanism by which you should be getting them for you.

I'm a regular INTERACT contributor and write a monthly column for INTERACT (The
Lighter Side). I have also been the DP Manager in a number of HP shops
and the magazine does not come with HP software support.

You can get the magazine in one of two ways. First, you can join INTEREX and
become an installation (or individual) member and get the magazine as
part of your membership. Or, you can subscribe to INTERACT just like you
would subscribe to any magazine.

INTEREX (and hence INTERACT and TC INTERFACE) are an independent organization
and not part of HP.

Hope this helps clear up any confussion.

Catch my column if you can find a copy of INTERACT. The Lighter Side began
with the December '87 issue and should be in all the 1988 issues.

We'd been Interex members for several years, receiving the Interact magazine
(and Interrupt bulletins) before realizing there are other HP3000 rags about.

A seperate user group SuperGroup exists with its own magazine of the same name.
I've never thought it was a good as Interact.

Unfortunately both these magazines stay on HP's side of things. What you should
order is a subscription to The HP Chronicle. This is a newspaper tabloid
also independent of HP that seems quicker to criticize HP than the other
two. Their articles can be a refreshing change from some of Interact's glitz.

Find the Chronicle through Wilson Publications in Cedar Park, TX.

INTEREX is the International Association of Hewlett Packard Computer
Users. It is independent of, but supported by, Hewlett Packard itself,
(in marked contrast I believe to DECUS, the Digital Equipment
equivalent). It supports both 3000 and 1000 series users, and to some
extent (growing), 9000 series users. INTEREX publishes a newsletter,
technical journals for the 3000 and the 1000 series machines, and
supports a contributed software library.

My experience has been with the 1000, and at the time I was last in
contact the CSL was rapidly increasing in quality and usefulness. The CSL
software is not, of course, supported in the usual sense. INTEREX
membership is, to a system programmer or manager, good value for money.
Cost to my previous employer for corporate membership was app. 350 UK
pounds sterling per annum, which included an annual CSL library tape,
2-monthly TC Interface (the 1000-series journal), and all conference
reports for the 1000 series.

INTEREX are at 680 Almanor Avenue
               Sunnyvale,
               California CA 94086-3513
               USA

               (408) 738-4848

but have offices in most countries. There are often national offshoots
also.

Hope this helps.
