After about 4 months on the net, it is quite obvious that the feed of comp.* is being selectively edited: only articles that mention HP are sent! Now I understand that the HP offices are sending the net as a convenience to their customers, but I would really like to see more. Personally, I am not interested in everything, but just because HP may not appear in the text, doesn't mean it is important to Unix users or to HP customers in general. I do not think the increased load would be that significant. If you are worried about phone bills, how about running compress first? It would save almost a factor of three in bytes sent. Instead of executing rnews with uuxqt, execute a shell script that does: compress -d | rnews I would like to at least see ALL of: comp.bugs.misc comp.bugs.sys5 comp.graphics comp.graphics.digest comp.laser-printers comp.mail.misc comp.mail.uucp comp.misc comp.newprod comp.os.eunice (we have eunice machines at our site) comp.os.misc comp.os.vms comp.periphs comp.sources.bugs comp.sources.d comp.sources.misc comp.sources.unix comp.sources.wanted comp.std.c comp.std.internat comp.std.misc comp.std.mumps comp.std.unix comp.sys.dec comp.sys.sun comp.sys.workstations comp.terminals comp.text comp.text.desktop comp.unix.questions comp.unix.wizards comp.windows.misc comp.windows.news comp.windows.x ------------- Roger N. re: "...it is quite obvious that the feed of comp.* is being selectively edited: only articles that mention HP are sent!" I administer one of the machines in the path from factory to HP field offices. Historically, the philosophy about the feed has been that the factory supplies to the field officess only that which they cannot get elsewhere, principally hp-internal groups and hug. Theoretically, the field is supposed to get their generic usenet feed from a geographically local source. In turn, the field would provide to their customers only that which the customers cannot obtain independently, namely hug. The reason for this is that the field offices, for the most part, connect to Fort Collins via 1200 baud modem, and there are a limited number of lines. It would be impossible (and enormously expensive) to provide everything. We did add comp.sys.hp and comp.sys.handhelds recently. On the bright side, the field interface system (hpfcse) has just installed a 9600 baud modem (which can also run at 19,200 with data compression), so we may be able expand the notesfiles available. It still makes more sense for your local office (and for you) to obtain comp, sci, misc, rec, etc. from a local unversity. Make sure you have at least 100Mbytes of incremental disc space available before turing on the hose :-) Bob Niland ARPA:rjn%hpfcrjn@hplabs.HP.COM UUCP:[ihnp4|hplabs]!hpfcla!rjn
