[comp.sys.hp] hard drives for odd-ball computers

thomas@amc-vlsi.UUCP (Thomas Rozek) (03/19/88)

Is there a reasonably priced hard drive for your home
         computer?

If the price for 20M is over $900 or if there is not a hard
drive available for your computer please leave me a note with the
make of the computer, current price of a 20M drive and whether or
not it has a floppy drive controller installed. Don't just stop
there but tell me whether you would like a 20M hard drive for
         $600.

          Thanx in advance.

[sorry for posting this... mailer barfed-up]

Yes! I am interested in getting a cheap hard-drive for my C64... here's
what I can find:
 - JCT: 3.7Mb, $495
        5 Mb, $595
        10 Mb, $695
        20 Mb, $795
 - Lt. Kernal: 20 Mb: 949.95 (C128), $899 (C64)
 - Mini-Chief: 20 Mb, $795
               40 Mb, 1195
(swiped this list from April 88 RUN magazine, pg 44)

I THINK the disk controller is built in (you don't have to purchase a
separate card for the floppy drive -- it just plugs into a built-in port... you
can daisy chain up to 4 (?) drives or printers).

If you can tell me where I can get a hard drive for the Commodore 64 or
Commodore 128 for less than the above prices, PLEASE LET ME KNOW! These prices
are ridiculous!!! I am just about to dump my system because a cheap hard-drive
is not available for it.

Ps: please don't flame me for mistakes in the C64 specifications.... I don't
have my C64 manual with me.

I wouldn't pay more than about $250 US for a 20 meg drive... 'course,
I'm talking a slower seagate drive and controller, but then for my
home system, it's plenty fast enough. $600 seems a bit high anyway,
because for $500 I'd expect a 40 Meg seagate with controller. Are
things that much higher outside of silicon valley?
