We've just installed HP-UX release 6 on our network (13 x hp9000/320s), and I've been reading the upgraded manual pages, looking for new features. Wow - it looks good, here we are "wait3" - and over there, "SIGSTOP", "SIGTSTP", "SIGCONT".... at last, HP-UX looks *useable*. They've put back all those things they took out when they had to make it look like System V. It was only when I read the small print that I saw the caveats "Series 300/500: $FEATURE is not supported" :-( In an environment of Suns, Vaxen, other BSD machines, porting code to the Bobcats is a real nightmare. What can I do? Come on HP - why spoil it, why not have the *same* system across all your machines? [Oops, I mean the better one, too :-)] I assume the reason that the 300 and 800 manuals are merged is to get us to buy 800s! Aled Morris systems programmer p.s. have HP heard about "rdump"? We are having a bit of trouble with the HPUX releases as well. Since we are heavily invested in 9000/200's, most of our machines are stranded from HPUX 6.0. To solve this, we are in the process of getting things together enought to switch most of the machines over to the 4.3 distributions out of Berkeley and Utah. We have been running the 4.3 on a 9836 here for a couple of months. It has some bugs in it, but it is mostly usable. Since we have to maintain seperate versions anyway (we can upgrade them all to 6.0) it looks more cost effective for us to switch to 4.3 and in general dump HPUX. johns ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- .
