We have an HP 9000-350 running HP-UX 5.3 When doing a backup onto cartridges using a 35401 cartridge unit that has an 8 slot magazine, we sometimes get the message : tcio: cannot verify tape /dev/update.src; errno 5 Does anybody know what this means ? I believe all HP cartridges are pre-formatted. Does this mean it is trying to read a header or something. If so, in what way are they pre-formatted ???? Problem is that we leave our backups running overnight unattended, and when we do a full backup onto about 5 cartridges it makes it very difficult to track down which cartridge is at fault. Also, having tracked down the faulty cartridge, is it possible to re-format it for later use ??? Thanks if anyone can help, Andy. -- Andy Pearman, Computer Dept, Philips Research Labs, Redhill, Surrey, England.

I would re-certify the tape or merely discard it. If it seems to be happening "somewhat often", I would start to suspect the drive. > I believe all HP cartridges are pre-formatted. That is true. They are all preformatted, but not all are certified. We recommend running "mediainit -r" when a new uncertified tape is received. Paul Perlmutter
