[comp.sys.hp] Spectrum review

mikea@utoday.UUCP (mikea) (07/25/88)

UNIX Today! plans to review one of HP's spectrum
machines in its next issue. We do our reviews by interviewing
users of the machine and writing up their opinions, rather
than by merely writing up our own personal views. If anyone
out there who is using a Spectrum class machine would like to
be interviewed, please contact me at 516-562-5922 or via
	the net at uunet!utoday!mikea.

HP is using the name HP-PA, HP Precision Architecture, instead of Spectrum for
this computer series because another company owns the Spectrum name; Spectrum
was the internal code name for the product line.

The machines in this series are the HP 9000/8xx and 9000/9xx computers.

> The machines in this series are the HP 9000/8xx and 9000/9xx computers.
                                                       ^

Actually, that's the HP 9000 Series 800 and the HP 3000 Series 900.
                                                   ^
The HP 9000's run HP-UX and the HP 3000's run MPE-XL (a proprietary
operating system).

I'll be calling you to discuss DIL, uucp and other
"conformance to standards" problems...

To be even more specific, there are doubtless lots of Spectra
out there, including ones from IEEE and Chevrolet. Trademarks
only apply within a particular business. (Lawyers argue over
where one business stops and the next begins.) While HP is
probably in the clear re: copier paper and small cars, I think
Foxboro controls or some such firm sells a Spectrum process
control system, and we do compete in that business.

If we are talking about the business of computers, how about the Sinclair
Spectrum?

From what I understand it was actually a guy in Aus. who created the biggest
stink. He had a computer range called spectrum and he didn't like HP invading
his patch one little bit. I forget his name now but it was a couple of years
ago now.
