The BSD programs dump(1M) and restore(1M) appeared on hp-ux on 9000/800 around version 1.2 I did not try to use those until after I installed 2.1, that I find that I can not get restore to work, no matter what I try I get: . is not on tape Root directory is not on tape abort? [yn] . is not on tapeDump date: Thu Nov 24 15:02:18 1988 Dumped from: Thu Jan 1 00:00:00 1970 I have tried restore with i,t and R options, both from tape and disk file. Does anyone know if restore works on HP-UX 2.1 ? -- Einar Kjartansson | eik@os.is Orkustofnun (National Energy Authority) | eik@geysir.uucp Grensasvegi 9, IS-108 Reykjavik, Iceland | mcvax!hafro!geysir!eik Phone: 354-1-83600 Fax: 354-1-688896 Home: 354-1-16407

Restore on 2.1 doesn't work with tapes produced with dump on 1.2. To restore old tapes, retrieve restore from 1.2 and use it to recover your files etc. (Don't forget to give it a different name -- "restore1.2") vic ps Aren't HP wonderful (^$%!@^$%#) pps See my article about how great HP are sometimes.

If you don't choose to abort the restore, you can get some really ugly stuff even when using the simplest possible dump and restore to/from tape. To wit: . is not on tape Root directory is not on tape abort? [yn] n . missing from directory . .. missing from directory . corrupted directory: ./. expected next file 8193, got 4 cannot find directory inode 3 abort? [yn] n //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////:pathname too long abort? [yn] n Bus error (core dumped) This comes from the restore command: /etc/restore rf /dev/rmt/0m of a dump like: /etc/dump 0udf 1600 /dev/rmt/0m /dev/rdsk/c1d0s3 on HP-UX 2.1. (The filesystem in question has long filenames enabled).

What are the advantages of 'dump' and 'restore'? I am quite satisfied with ftio (fixed up cpio) -- but I have never used dump/restore. -al

Tar extracted something called "restore.nca" in a directory named HPUX0100 or something close to that. At that point I could not figure out what to do with restore.nca, nor could I get an answer from the HP Response Center except to tell me that the tape was not a tar tape and I should use cpio! I dutifully tried cpio and got _nothing_ from the tape. I reported that problem to the response center and I'm still waiting for a reply! HP, what's up?

So use Tar to read restore.nca onto disk, then use cpio to read restore.nca as if it were a tape. -- David Smith HP Labs dsmith@hplabs.hp.com
