[comp.sys.hp] Help ! xpr on HP9000/300's doesn't work...

rkl@mva.cs.liv.ac.uk (Richard K. Lloyd) (01/30/89)

The other day, I thought it would be really neat to be able to dump a
window in X11 to a Postscript (Apple Laserwriter) or LaserJet Series II
printer. I failed and here's the reason why...

We are using HP9000 Series 300 monochrome workstations (318's to be precise)
running HP-UX 6.2 and have 3 flavours of X Windows : X10, X11R2 (HP's official
version) and X11R3. The command to (theoretically) dump a window to a
Postscript printer in X11R3 is :

xwd -xy | xpr -device ps | lp -dps
     ^ ^
     | |
Needed because xpr The name of our
only likes xy dump format Postscript queue

However, investigation has proved that the xpr command is generating faulty
Postscript from the dump generated by xwd. xwd is not to blame because the
command xwud -in <dump name> (where <dump name> is the dump from xwd) works
correctly. Our Postscript queue is also blameless, because other Postscript
files that have been sent to it have come out OK.

My plea is this : Has anyone managed to produce a patch for xpr that actually
makes it produce proper Postscript ? Even better - does anyone have a PD
utility that can convert an xwd dump into the format required for a LaserJet
Series II (e.g. an xpr -device laserjet or something equivalent) ?
