I am in the process of setting up a new backup procedure for our HP9000 series 350, 540 and 825 systems, and am hoping someone will be able to offer suggestions regarding the best/most robust/most efficient way to go about it. We will have Ethernet, NS/ARPA, NFS and NS/9000 available ultimately (3xx-8xx) and NS/9000 (5xx) and an HP7980, HP7970E and numerous HP9144's. We are considering an 8mm format when (if) the HPIB version of that recently announced device becomes available. Confusion arises when looking at the various archiving utilities offered: ftio - only on 3xx, 5xx and not cpio compatible (default) or with large blocking factors (>5120). Is the source available ?? tar - hadn't really considered it, owing to limitations. cpio - better than tar (?) but not overly fast/efficient dump - LOOKS good, but don't know of BUGS, gotcha's etc. Also, restore (-r) looks like it can really smoke an archive if given half a chance ... How good is single file/directory recovery ??? ??? - Is there something new coming down the pipe (as alluded in reserved field info in /etc/mnttab ??) What does HP recommend? What does HP use? Any comments, suggestions etc would be appreciated. -=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=- Robert S.
