An informal marketing survey question: Suppose you were given a choice between optimization tools and performance analysis tools. Which would you be more likely to use to get more performance from your application? Which would you or your management be more willing to pay for? More data for you to think about: An advanced optimization tool would be good because you don't have to make any changes to your source code. You just run the tool and the program runs faster. On the other hand, this optimization tool makes your program extremely difficult to debug. A performance analysis tool is good because it gives you, the programmer, control over the changes. On the other hand, it requires modifications to the source code. One other question: What features would you like to see in your ideal application performance analysis tool? What data would it give you? How would it be presented? (I am posting this on my own initiative and was not asked by HP to gather this information. For the moment, it's just my curiosity as an engineer who is currently working on optimization technology.) Daryl Odnert Hewlett-Packard California Language Lab
