Is there an unsupported driver for this pair? If so, could someone tell me how to go about getting it? Richard Congdon UofC Social Sciences Division Computing richard@{cicero,paideia}.uchicago.edu

Re: Driver for 7979/7980 on S-500 I don't know of any driver but the 7979/80 tape drives can emulate the 7974/78 tape drives which are supportted on the S-500. You just use the front panel on the tape drive to change the configuration. I use this on my S-500 and it works fine. Joseph

Due to a change in buffer management from 7974/78 to 7979/80, and a doubling of the buffer size, if you open the /dev/*mt* device at anywhere but BOT, it will result in a time-out error every other time on s500. Changes to the mt driver have been proposed for 5.3. Meanwhile, the 7974AR and 7978BR are available as remanufactured products from HP FRD.

I have looked at my 7979A manual, but have unable to discover how one might do this. Could someone please tell me? Select CONF 100 and set it to 48 2. Select CONF 101 and set it to 76 3. Select CONF 40 and set it to "ON" (keeps change in NVRAM) 4. Select CONF 82 and set it to "HP7978" I hope this works for you. I also found out that you might need rev 5.13 of segment 41, the 7984 driver in the OS boot area. Regards, Joseph
