[comp.sys.hp] HP9000/520 serial connection to SUN's

tss@beta.lanl.gov (Timothy S Sullivan) (03/15/89)

	I have a HP9000/520 running HP-UX 5.21 and a Telebit T-1000
9600 baud modem. I use the modem to dial in to a SUN-4 network with
a Telebit Trailblazer modem. Things are set up so that when I dial in
(using cu) the connection is in PEP mode (as indicated by the FST
light) and I can cat a file from the SUN to my HP screen at about
6500 "baud". (All the "baud" rates are calculated as numer of
characters times 8 divided by transmission time).
So far so good, but we need a way to transfer rather large
files (say 350k characters) from one system to the other (with
error correction) at a rate close to 9600 baud. In the past, to
another machine, over a direct line we've successfully used the HP-UX
kermit. However, when I try this over the modem to the SUN, kermit
seems to execute normally but the effective "baud" rate is about
five hundred (500).
A suggestion has been made that maybe the kermit packet size
is too small. However, the kermit(1) documentation doesn't seem to
give a way to twiddle packet size. I'm planning to bring up UUCP
but are there any assurances that the transfer rate will be higher?
	Any suggestions?
