[comp.sys.hp] FrameMaker Under HPUX

ries@arcturus (Marc Ries) (04/22/89)

Are there any HP HP-UX FrameMaker users out there?

If so, would you mind commenting on:

   1) Which laser printers you are using for output?

   2) Are you using the stock FrameMaker "frame2pcl"
(Frame to Postscript Command Language) filter for
printing? The stock method (frame2pcl) seems NOT to
be the most efficient method (i.e., not letting the
printer itself process the PCL). As an example, a
20 page set of viewgraphs ended up as a 16 MB (!)
data file shipped directly to the printer.

                 Thanks in advance,

Are you sure frame2pcl isn't frame -> HP PCL, the Printer Command
Language that HP printers use? If it is, be forewarned that PCL
bitmap graphic files can get HUGE, especialy at 300 dpi. Not only
do you need tons of disk space to print these files but you'll want
to run your LaserJet (or other printer) at the fastest serial speed
possible, or preferably parallel or HPIB/IEEE-488...
