Has Anyone have been able to get a Telebit Plus to work on a HP 9000/825 with Mux 98196A ? The cable that I have used from the Multiplexer to the modem has the following pin outs. 1 ----------- 1 2 ----------- 3 3 ----------- 2 4 ----------- 5 5 ----------- 4 20 ----------- 6 6 ----------- 20 also tried the cable as suggested in the HP Multiplexer manual. i.e. 1 ------------ 1 2 ------------ 3 3 ------------ 2 4 ------------ 8 6 ------------ 20 7 ------------ 7 8 ------------ 4 9 ------------ 22 20 ------------ 6 22 ------------ 5 23 ------------ 23 But none of them worked. The entries for the Systems ,Devices ,Dialers and /etc/inittab files are civ Any ACU 9600 3915 - Entry in the Devices file ACU ttyd0p5 - 9600 tbfast - Entry in the Dialers file tbfast =W-, ""A\pATE1M1Q0V1X0S7=45\r OK ATDT\T CONNECT\sFAST - Entry in the inittab file c5:0123456:respawn:/usr/lib/uucp/uugetty -r -t60 ttyd0p5 The registers of the telebit modem is E0 F1 M1 Q3 P V0 X1 S00=1 S01=0 S02=43 S03=13 S04=10 S05=8 S06=2 S07=40 S08=2 S09=6 S10=7 S11=70 S12=50 S45=0 S47=4 S48=0 S49=0 S50=0 S51=4 S52=0 S53=0 S54=0 S55=0 S56=17 S57=19 S58=3 S59=0 S60=0 S61=45 S62=3 S63=1 S64=0 S65=0 S66=0 S67=0 S68=255 S90=0 S91=0 S92=0 S95=0 S100=0 S101=0 S102=0 S104=0 S110=255 S111=30 S112=1 S121=0 I tried the following command but none of them worked cu -d9 civ cu -d9 -s9600 -l/dev/ttyd0p5 The symptoms of the problem is when dialing with the modem speaker on I couldn't hear the dial tones at all. - Looks likes the modem "is not "connected to the Multiplexer at all. Is the multiplexer a DTE or DCE ? From the wiring, I would assume it is a DCE, am I right ?? Any help would be much appreciated. Boon

re: "...also tried the cable as suggested in the HP Multiplexer manual." Try using an HP 92219Q cable. This cable is the only pre-fab cable I know of that converts the default DCE pinouts of the MUX to DTE for modem use. Bob Niland ARPA:rjn%hpfcrjn@hplabs.HP.COM UUCP:[hpfcse|hplabs]!hpfcla!rjn

You should wire it like this: modem mux pin 2--------------pin 3 pin 3--------------pin 2 pin 7--------------pin 7 pin 8--------------pin 4 pin 20-------------pin 6 The 92219Q cable is wired like this, and is the cable you should order. > The symptoms of the problem is when dialing with the modem speaker on > I couldn't hear the dial tones at all. - Looks likes the modem "is not > "connected to the Multiplexer at all. Just because the modem didn't make any noise doesn't mean it's not working. When you connect with cu, the TR light should light up on the modem. You should be able to get the modem to say 'OK' when you type just 'AT'. raab

Boon ---------- You might try a cable that is end-end, i.e., 2-2, 3-3, 7-7, etc. The 98196 mux panel (to the best of my knowledge) is DTE and you only reverse 2 & 3 when hooking a modem or DCE devices to it (like some printers). Otherwise, try a standard straight through cable. It works with HP terminals.

Might work better that the one I made with the HP engineer's suggestion. I was just trying to describe the problem. The modem was set for speaker ON and typing AT didn't bring a reponse of OK and the TR light didn't come on. On typing ATDT "phone number" , I couldn't hear the dialtones -> conclusion, I was no getting to the modem. Any way I called HP hotline and after 2 engineers later, the problem was a BAD Multiplexer port. I was able to get a 2400 baud modem connected and working on another port (well, kind of). Now to try the telebit. According to the first HP engineer, the telebit is not a HP supported modem and he will not answer any questions relating to it at all. But on the whole both the engineers were very helpful. I will summary my adventure to HP land after all is done if ever. Boon

The wire is > > 2 --------- 3 > 3 --------- 2 > 7 --------- 7 > 8 --------- 20 > 20 --------- 8 This is definitely wrong. It's ok for other serial cards, but the 6 channel mux has brain-damaged pin-outs. > Sorry to everyone if I was not clear enough. I was just trying to > describe the problem. According to By any chance, are you trying to connect the telebit to port 0 on the mux? That won't work, don't know why, try another port. > the first HP engineer, the telebit is not a HP supported modem and he will no> answer any questions relating to it at all. If you can get a hayes or almost any other modem to work, you should be able to get the telebit to work. Be sure and scream if you continue to have problems. raab
