[comp.sys.hp] LaserJet cartridges, More RAM,

m2@insyte.UUCP (Mike Arena) (05/19/89)

We have an original LaserJet printer (with only 59K of memory) and
would like to upgrade it to be able to do full page 300x300bpi graphics.

I saw an add for a cartridge called JetMemory which had 1.5MB from a company
called Computer Peripherals, Inc. Unfortunately, there was no address or
phone number given. If anyone has any information about this company or
its products, please email it to me.

Also, is it possible to upgrade the motherboard in the LaserJet itself?

No. Once upon a time you could buy an LJ -> LJ+ upgrade, but that was a
brain transplant that replaced the entire board. The LJ board isn't designed
to be field-upgradeable, and there is also the little problem that there is
no documentation on it. (The LJ/LJ+ service manual treats the board as a
mysterious black box.)

This is kind of silly, since in principle it's just new RAMs and new ROMs,
but my recollection (from the last time I did the brain transplant) is that
the LJ and LJ+ boards are laid out somewhat differently, i.e. they may have
made other changes.

Beware that the fine print in the specs for those things often says "for
LJ+ or LJ2 only". I assume this is because of stupid firmware in the LJ
that isn't up to handling strange-looking cartridges.

The HP 26054A upgrade kit still exists. It upgrades a 2686A LJ, 2686A#300 LJ+
or 2686D LJ500 to "+" capabilities and 2Mbytes of on-board RAM. Unfortunately
it is priced at about $2500, or about the same as a new LJ-II. :-(
