Does anyone know of a user friendly mail interface that runs under
X on a 300 series.

Thanks,

I suppose you could call "xmh" user-friendly, if you could find any
documentation (:-(). You'll get it off the standard MIT distribution.
It is an X interface to the Rand Mail Handler system (MH).

You can try to get it and compile it on your system. Good luck!

I prefer to read mail using emacs. I wrote my own macros, but I know that
Unipress Emacs and Gnu Emacs both provide packages that manipulate mail for
you. The nice thing about emacs mailers is their seamless integration into
the emacs editing enviornment -- you can cut and paste, zero overhead to edit
messages, etc. Since Gnu runs under X, I think this solution meets your
criteria.

As another alternative, have you tried elm? I use the X Window System and
find elm in an hpterm window works fine.

"ELM" stands for "ELectronic Mailer." It is a screen-oriented mailer in the
public domain that has developed quite a following. The Elm Development Group
keeps discussion lively in comp.mail.elm. elm has the added advantage of
being supported by HP (for HP hosts) as a standard command in a future HP-UX
release.

This is from the monthly posting of the EDG:

The following sites have agreed to make Elm available via anonymous ftp.
