[comp.sys.hp] Need info on OLD HP winchester controller

onymouse@netcom.UUCP (John DeBert) (06/15/89)

I need technical info, preferably a manual for the 9855 hard disk drive
used on HP Series 500 systems.

HP is no longer able to supply manuals or any other info on Series 500.

If someone can send me a manual or a copy of one, I am willing o negotiate
a price for it.

Thanx in advance,
 J DeBert

This doesn't ring true. Our general policy is to keep accessories on the
pricelist for a year after mainframe discontinuance, and supplies and repair
parts for 7 to 10 years. All of the s500 documentation should still be
orderable.

Do you have a part number, or at least a manual title?

To the best of my (15 years in HP support) knowledge there has never been a
product called 9855 in HP history. I'm afraid you've got the wrong number.

Best regards, Jaap Vegter.

I should have pointed this out earlier...

There never was a product numbered "9855". The Series 500 Model 520 was
originally envisioned as the successor to the 9845, and the product number
9855 was allocated. Many of the components bear the prefix 09855-, however
the actual product number assigned was 9020.

I presume you are asking about the built-in 10- or 20-Mbyte Seagate hard
disk assembly. This was sold (as a field upgrade) as product 97093A.
I will poke around tommorrow and see what documents are supposed to exist.

It is true, nonetheless. Both customer service, who checked around for four
days and the folks in Roseville, who tried searching for the part number I
gave them could find any cross-reference or any information at all. I got
some info from a company that provides service for HP systems but no manuals.

I have a subassembly, a PC board, # 09855-69886, which is listed as a
"winchester controller." It was manufactured for HP in mid-1984. It is still
available from HP but no information about the part is available from HP.
