[comp.sys.hp] Vectra Vs. Irwin

jeff@dsndata.uucp (Jeff Minnig) (07/25/89)

Have a problem with Xenix 2.3.1 and an Irwin 245 tape drive on
a HP Vectra 25. When I cold-boot the machine, the "boot"
program is gotten off disk, and starts loading the kernel. Then
everything hangs. Just stops. The only way that I can get to
my machine is to power cycle. The same op sys configuration will
run fine at 12 mHz, but when I boot at 25 mHz, the machine hits
a brick wall...

I have in the machine:
        4 Mb of memory
1 Arnet Smartport 8 (Works fine with the new driver)
1 Irwin 245 40 Mb mini cartrige tape drive
        1 Hi/Low Density Floppy drive.

The Irwin and the Floppy are both driven off of the same
        controller card.

I've been in and out of SCO support trying to get this fixed for
over two months. If anyone has any ideas, please, send'em on.

Thanks in advance

You need to turn the memory cache off. Talk to your dealer about
a special command that can be typed at the setup menu to allow
you to turn the memory cache off. I just spent the entire day
fighting one of these monsters and talked to SCO about it. They,
in all of 30secs, told me that all the 25Mhz vectra machines have
a little problem with the cache and the way Xenix runs!

BTW I know the commands but I am not certain if they are 'classified'.

HP has published a xenix patch that actually takes care of the timing
problem associated with their RS20C & RS25C cpu's. The patch is necessary
only on their later cpu's that use a later release of Intels cache controller
chip. I don't recall the revision level but I'm sure you could check with
your nearest friendly HP dealer for more specific information.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.
