Re: Performance of HP 9000 Series 300 workstations and
diskless clusters.
Quite often customers ask about the performance of workstations
and diskless clusters. Questions like, "How fast does this
workstation run? How many nodes can I hang off of a diskless file
server and still realize good performance? What kind of performance
can I expect running application 'XYZ'?", are not uncommon. While
traditional benchmarks, that of Linpack, Dhrystone, Whetstone, MIPS,
..., offer one view of workstation performance, they may or may not
accurately reflect the performance of a workstation running "normal"
user applications. In other words, users really want to know what
happens to interactive response time as the workload increases.
In an effort to better understand system performance, HP has spent
significant amounts of time and money evaluating, and characterizing,
the performance of workstations and diskless clusters. Our experience
testing one possible application, the HP 64000-UX Microprocessor
Development System, has been documented and is available for
distribution. This 'Performance Brief' takes a look at stand-alone
and diskless cluster performance of HP's MC68020 and MC68030-based
workstations.
NOTE: This Performance Brief reviews diskless and
stand-alone workstation performance as it
pertains to the use of HP 64000-UX tools.
This may or may not be an accurate reflection
of what you notice running other applications
or tools on HP workstations!

Please make sure you include a FULL, SURFACE MAIL ADDRESS in your note
(including zip code). I would also appreciate your help in paring
down the response text. A simple sentence requesting the document,
followed by your return address would suffice. (We're automating as
much of this as possible.) Please do NOT send mail to me -- I have
enough stuff to sort through as it is. :-)
In addition, HP p/n 5953-3788, "ME-CAD Workgroup Cluster
Performance Brief", contains information on the diskless cluster
performance of HP's ME-CAD system. Contact your local HP Sales
Representative to receive a copy of this document.
I trust you'll find both papers provide an excellent insight into
"real" system performance. Happy reading!
