HP PUTS POSTSCRIPT IN A CARTRIDGE FOR THE HP LASERJET IID PRINTER

September 17th, 1989 --- Hewlett-Packard Company today announced a
PostScript accessory for the HP LaserJet IID printer. The cartridge is
$995 U.S. list and contains the PostScript page-description language,
licensed from Adobe Corporation, and 35 Adobe typefaces.

With the PostScript cartridge, the HP LaserJet IID printer is the
only printer to combine Adobe-licensed PostScript and HP PCL printer-
language support for meeting a broad base of business-office printing
needs. The PostScript cartridge, which can be used on any HP LaserJet
IID printer, is a host-independent solution, allowing users to share
the printer easily.

The cartridge also gives IBM/PC compatible users connectivity to
PostScript capable output devices, such as typesetting and 35mm slide
making equipment, and alternative computing environments, including
workstations with UNIX operating systems. The cartridge is not
supported on the Apple Macintosh.

The PostScript cartridge can be inserted into either of the two font
cartridge slots on the LaserJet IID printer. Two Mbytes of printer
memory are needed to use the PostScript cartridge with simplex (one-
sided) printing, and 4 Mbytes of printer memory are needed for duplex
(two-sided) printing. Users also have access to the more than 500
typefaces available in the Adobe Type Library.

[ btw: HP is also working on a similar cartridge for the newly
released LaserJet IIP personal laser printer. That should be
announced some time next spring ... -- Dave ]

Wonder if anyone can tell us about the 600 dpi units that Cannon is
co-developing with HP. Wonder when they'll ship and if postscript will
be an option. The trade journal I read talked about a year end introduction.
