[comp.sys.hp] Backup over a net

carroll@nprdc.navy.mil (Larry Carroll) (09/20/89)

My current configuration consists of an HP
9000/835 with 2 304MB and 2 404MB drives, and a
9145 (32-track) tape drive.

Is it just me or is the 9145 a DOG??? After backuping
up ~280MB (fbackup) it was very evident that an
alternative was needed.

Questions:

1. Does anyone have any experience backuping over
a net to another tape drive attached to a node (e.g.,
Sun 4 --> 8mm SCSI tape drive)?

2. Does anyone have a port for the BSD program "rdump"
--OR-- is there another dump program that supports remote
dump? THIS IS PREFERRED TO USING A PIPE TO REMSH ...

3. Any other ideas/experiences?

Please reply via direct email or posting to this net.

Thanks in advance

That's rather a lot to back up with a 134 Mbyte tape drive.

What performance are you experiencing? It should be possible to approach
the 66 Kbytes/sec streaming transfer rate of the 9145A, and exceed it [net]
by compressing the data, but there are also several popular ways of falling
far short of these as well.

Well, the sources to GNU tar also come with the sources to a remote
tape server (written at Berkeley). However, although you don't see it,
GNU tar does a "hidden" rsh or remsh to the remote tape server machine
to run the remote tape server program.

When you mean DOG, how long did it take?

I just finished backing up about 240 Mbytes with fbackup, 9-track
1600 bpi tape drive (6 full tapes). The tape drive flew the whole
time, but with rewinds, mounting and unmounting tapes the elapsed
time was 1-hour and twenty minutes.

I have a 9145 about to go online, which I hope will give me
more (unattended) backup service (changing one tape is easier than 5
changes with the 9-track).

Better alternative: DAT when is it coming? I need it now (AND ON
HPIB)!
