Has anyone had any luck getting hp-ux to deal with an exabyte 8mm tape drive? One has been loaned to me, but I have been unable to get tar or dump to recognize the device. I am running hp-ux 6.5 on a 370. The scsi driver is ok, as I have a couple of wrens mounted and working well. Any help much appreciated. -jem John Milburn - Advanced Light Source - Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory INTERNET: JEMilburn@lbl.gov BITNET: JEMilburn@LBL.bitnet UUCP: {...}!ucbvax!lbl.gov!JEMilburn

We are using Exabyte 8mm drives from Perfect Byte on our HP 9000/360 cluster servers under HP-UX 6.5. The SCSI device driver included in HP-UX will not work with tape drives (this is documented in one of the HP manuals). We are on the third revision of a SCSI driver supplied by Perfect Byte, which is now working without problems. You'll have to contact the vendor for your 8mm drive and ask for an HP-UX SCSI driver that supports the drive. HP support for SCSI is not enthusiastic. Their "monitor" program, for example, cannot display I/O statistics for drives on SCSI interfaces. Since third party SCSI drives are the best mass storage solution for HP file servers I hope HP will improve their SCSI support in future releases of HP-UX. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - O John Lees, Manager of Systems A. Perhaps the SCSI support will improve - HP was showing an optical drive at SIGGRAPH that (at least at the time) came with a SCSI interface and no HPIB.
