The October IEEE Spectrum magazine has an article on Digital Audio Tape (DAT) for data storage. One of the pictures shows a unit with an HP logo! Anybody at HP like to comment on when this unit will be in production? Perhaps when you can say when it'll be in production would be a more politic question? :-) The tape drive apparently holds 1300 MB, transfers 183Kb/sec and has an access time of 20 seconds. The authors, from HP in the UK, also say that automatic tape changers are in development for larger capacities. You should be able to buy HP DAT units sometime next year. I would say "early next year" but I'm not, so don't quote me on it. They will be available with HPIB and SCSI interfaces. Your capacity and transfer rate info looks about right. Don't know the prices yet. The drives are the product of a collaboration between HP and SONY. They are intended to replace quarter inch and low-end half inch technologies for backup, data interchange, and whatever else you use 'em for.
