[comp.sys.hp] Need Help with UUCP over X.25

sysadm@crpmks.UUCP (System Administrator) (11/08/89)

Fellow Usenetters,

We're having some difficulty configuring a UUCP connection over our X.25
leased line to Europe. The machines in question are both HP 9000's.

Our side (the local side) is running HP/UX Version 5.01C which uses the
older UUCP (L.sys, L-devices, etc.). The remote side is running a more
current release which uses HoneyDanBer.

The remote site has no trouble polling us and completing a uucp
conversation. However, we cannot establish a connection with the
remote side when we initiate the poll. Each site has separate ports
dedicated for outgoing and incoming calls, and both sides are using
Dynatech Multi-PAD.25's. The configuration is illustrated as follows:

+-----------+          PAD        . .          PAD             +-----------+
|           |  in <--   |\      .     .         /|   <--  out  |           |
|  HP 9000  |-----------|  \   . X.25   .     /  |-------------|  HP 9000  |
|   local   |-----------|  /  .  Private  .   \  |-------------|  remote   |
|  "cgad"   |  out -->  |/    .  Data     .     \|   -->  in   |  "cgpi"   |
+-----------+                  . Network .                     +-----------+
                                  . .
When our side (cgad) issues a poll, the connection over the network is
established and the remote login prompt is received. So far so good.
Next, it appears that cgad sends the login string and this gets accepted
by the remote.

Next, the message: Shere=<remote system name> appears and the systems
just wait until the connection eventaully times out.

The following is what gets reported by the debug output of uucico:

   uucico -r1 -x6 -scgpi       |     Comments
-------------------------------|--------------------------------------
  wanted ogin: | <-- Waits for "ogin"
  got that | <-- Login is recieved by cgad
  in ub_sst name=Rmtname: cgpi | <-- cgad logs in, attempts to start uucico
  valid sys Shere=cgpi | <-- This is where it "hangs" ???
  in ub_sst name=Rmtname: cgpi | <-- Last 3 lines appear just as uucico exits
  o cgpi - wrong system | <-- Hmm..don't know why it says "wrong system"
  exit code 0                  | <-- That's all she wrote.

The "wrong system" message led me to believe that something in the uucp
software configuration was wrong (bad passwd file entry, uname(), etc.) yet,
this has been checked repeatedly and I'm going to assume for now that
the uucp setup files are correct on both ends. (I've been through *that*
exercise too many times before! :-))

I've been told that having parity set improperly can cause uucp
to fail. Could this possibly be causing the problem? If so,
how should I set parity and on which devices? In general, what does
parity do and how does it affect uucp?

Here are the stty settings on the serial port that we using to go out from;
(stty -a run when the uucico process is running)

speed 1200 baud; line = 0; intr = DEL; quit = ^|; erase = #; kill = @; eof = ^f;
 eol = ^a
-parenb -parodd cs8 -cstopb hupcl cread clocal crts
-ignbrk -brkint -ignpar -parmrk -inpck -istrip -inlcr -igncr -icrnl -iuclc
-ixon -ixany -ixoff -ienqak
-isig -icanon -xcase -echo -echoe -echok -echonl -noflsh
-opost -olcuc -onlcr -ocrnl -onocr -onlret -ofill -ofdel

I realize there are many factors involved in this situation. We are dealing
with many communication devices and getting uucp to work over the X.25
network complicates matters.

I would deeply appreceate any clues as to how to resolve this. Once
this is working, I will gladly summrize and provide this information
to the rest of the net. Thank you.
