another one of those apparently simple-minded questions from a unix novice: we're trying to run a hp2635b printing terminal as a remote spooled printer on our 9000/835s running 3.1. the closest we can come to a driver is usr/spool/lp/model/hp2631g. using SAM (the idiots delight) we note it sets up 3 files: 1. usr/spool/lp/request/hp2635g 2. usr/spool/lp/member/hp2635g 3. usr/spool/lp/interface/hp2635g seems to work okay with a simple cat, but loses it's mind a bit when used with forms.. spacing is off a tad. tried ../model/dumb but got nothing... response center can only seem to keep repeat that they don't know of such a printer... (we KNOW it's no longer supported, but gee wiz, guys!!) anyone have any helpful suggestions would be earnestly appreciated by some very puzzled beginners. e mail can be addressed to ar.bxa@forsythe.stanford.edu if this doesn't seem worth the bandwidth. thanks in advance for any help, suggestions, references, etc. bob

re: "we're trying to run a hp2635b printing terminal as a remote spooled printer on our 9000/835s running 3.1." The 2635B is the keyboarded (terminal) version of the 2631B printer. Both are long discontinued and are not officially supported by the Series 800. The 2635B was available only with an RS-232C serial interface, as I recall. > the closest we can come to a driver is > usr/spool/lp/model/hp2631g. I wouldn't use that one. The 2631G is an HP-IB interface printer, and one that uses AMIGO protocol as well. You need to start with model intended for a serial printer, preferrably one that speaks an unsophisticated version of HP-PCL, like PCL Level 1. I would suggest "hp2227a" or "hp2225d". > seems to work okay with a simple cat, but loses it's mind a > bit when used with forms.. spacing is off a tad. You are probably running without Xon/Xoff handshake, and are experiencing overruns (lost data). The 2631G uses HP-IB hardware flow control and does not contain the needed "stty ixon" statement found in all of the serial spooler models. Furthermore, the 2635B itself may be configured for Enq/Ack handshake rather than Xon/Xoff (DC1/DC3). Check the 2635 configuration (see the reference manual) and try a serial spooler model. You may need to hack the 'stty' line. It probably sets the port speed to 9600 or 19200, and as I recall, the 2630B-series serial interface maxed-out at 2400. > response center can only seem to keep repeat that they don't know of such a > printer... (we KNOW it's no longer supported, but gee wiz, guys!!) The Response Center answers questions about unsupported configurations on a "best effort" basis. The 2635 is well before their time. If you get it working, you might contribute the configuration information to them.
