[comp.sys.hp] Looking for info on HP 9915

roy@phri.nyu.edu (Roy Smith) (11/23/89)

We have a piece of lab equipment (An Applied Biosystems DNA
synthesizer) which has what looks like an imbedded OEM process controller
built by HP. Our ABI serviceman says the controller is bad and wants $4200
to replace it. Our best guess is that it's just the power supply (we saw
the line transformer smoking) and we might be able to fix it ourselves if
we had the service manual. Unfortunately, we don't know exactly what it is
(there isn't a model number on it). I called HP in Paramus, NJ and they
are going to try and track it down from the serial number, but they didn't
sound too confident they would be able to, so I'm going to the net to see
if anybody knows anything about it.

The service guy refers to the module as a "9915" which sort of
sounds like an HP part number, but the HP folks say they don't recognize,
at least at first glance. It's an open frame unit, about 8 x 5 x 16
inches, with a couple of PC boards, a daughter board with space for 8
24-pin dips (almost certainly customer roms; there is one installed, with
an ABI label), connection for a line cord set, D connectors for "KEYBOARD"
and "CONTROL", a BNC connector for "VIDEO", a 3-slot card cage containing a
82903A 16k memory module, 82940A GP-IO interface (with cable to the rest of
the machine) and a 82937A HB-IB interface (cabled to an external 9121
3.5-inch floppy drive). It has a plate which says "HEWLETT-PACKARD GMBH",
has a stamped number "2114G01985", and then "BOEBLINGEN Fed. Rep. of
Germany" and another label indicating that the Boeblingen desktop computer
division shipped it on "Oktober 28, 1983"

So, does anybody know exactly what this is? What the model number
is? Any experience repairing one of these, etc?

A 9915 is a rack-mount version of an HP-85 personal computer. It was produced
from around 1982 to around 1985, I think. I would expect that most of the
hardware would be the same as an HP-85.

I hope this helps!
