[comp.sys.hp] hp3000 + 4Gl

dan@blender.UUCP (Dan Keizer) (11/26/89)

Hi ... I've made a few postings to this group before ... I'm new to
the HP environment. I'm working with the 3000 systems (micro gx at
the moment) running MPE. I've been getting into Speedware and dabbling
with the Today language. I'm curious as to how others feel about these
languages. They're 4GL's and each has interesting features. From what
I've seen of the Today language, I wouldn't say I'd use it if I could.
Being a menu-driven programming environment .. it lacks some contemporary
programming features ....

Speedware, on the other hand, has more flexibility environment wise. We
usually edit the files on our pc's and upload the source to the hp with
reflections. Maintaining the source on the hp is a little cumbersome
considering the editors that are available.

So ... any others using this??

BTW: Anyone have some kind of UUCP software for this machine, or am
I going to have to use our Xenix systems?

Thanks for any info ...
Dan.

Hi !
First : I have no experience with any of the 4GL's you've mentioned, but I'd
like to give some input anyway.

I'm currently studing at UCSB, but regularly I work for a computer consulting
company in Bergen , Norway. In the Norwegian HP3000 community, PowerHouse is
THE BIG choice of 4GL. I have used it for several years, and must say that it
is quite good. Of course, any (at least most) 4GL's have some limitations or
other, but PowerHouse is very easy to use, flexible, and easy for the users to
handle. I think also that in the worldwide market, PowerHouse is the 4GL leader
in the HP3000 community.

However, I've heard rumours that Oracle is entering the stage quite rapidly,
so it'll be interesting to se what happens in the future.

By the way, it makes me glad to se an HP3000 user in here, I've felt lonely
in the UNIX dominated University surroundings !!

Harald
