Thanks to all who answered my query concerning disabling the caps key !!
Using xmodmap under X is a good enough solution for me - I'll defer using
the screwdriver technique until I can't stand it any more.

For those who tried to mail and had it bounce - my apologies - our
mailer has been sick for weeks.
