One of the latest trends in Unix computing is to have a graphical user environment built on top of a windowing system like X Windows and/or the Motif window manager. An obvious, though not-yet-shipping, example of this is HP's own New Wave/UX product, scheduled for spring of 1990. Thing is, there are a number of interesting alternatives out there in the marketplace currently, including X.desktop from IXI Ltd of the UK (distributed in the US by UniPress) and Looking Glass from Visix. There's even another new one that's just about to hit our shores from the UK called "y.opentop" or something like that from Torch. One thing that they all have in common is that they're "Mac-like" interfaces for Unix systems. The question is, is anyone running any of these on HP 9000/300 workstations, and if so, what do they think? Have you or your site evaluated any of these? What other products do you know of that might run on an HP 9000 are out there? Are you and your firm interested in more sophisticated graphical user environments, and what kind of things would you like to see from one? Do you feel that NewWave/UX will meet your needs? Please respond via email: I can summarize if there's interest. -- Dave Taylor Intuitive Systems Mountain View, California taylor@limbo.intuitive.com or {uunet!}{decwrl, apple}!limbo!taylor
