My company came across some HP Tape Drives that are in "unused" condition. The number on the drives is HP88780A, which we have been told is the OEM version of the HP 7980. The drives have a SCSI Interface, and run at 6250 BPI, 125 IPS. We would appreciate any information we can get on these drives, such as type of systems they run on, value, etc. Also, if anyone is interested in purchasing one of these drives, we will be willing to sell a couple. According to the 1989 Test & measurement catalog of HP, page 712 the HP7980 provides backup solution to systems in the 400 MB to 2 GByte range. It operates at both 1600/6250 densities. Support is provided on most HP3000, 1000, 9000 systems. Cost is: $23,200 ---------------------- K. Konstantinides

I know that a SCSI version of the HP7980 tape drive is OEMed by AT&T for the 3B2. I don't know the part-number off hand, but I'll bet it's the same. #include <disclaimer.h> Mark Fresolone

Be careful. The 7980a is an hp-ib version and is not supported on the usual hp stuff. the mechanisms were sold to OEM's who would then write the appropriate drivers for them. tonyc

re: > I know that a SCSI version of the HP7980 tape drive is OEMed by AT&T... Possibly the 88780A Option 004, although this SCSI version of the "7980" has been around much longer than the SCSI serial standards, so I wouldn't be surprised if there are several different SCSI versions, perhaps one per OEM customer.
