I've been learning networking addressing, and examining the HP sendmail file under HPUX 6.5. I don't understand why HP did what they did. I only have uucp networking (that's not exactly true, I do have ethernet and a diskless node, but for this discussion it's close enough). When I mail a message using elm (net version) $ elm jim%foobar@mips.com this fails. It trys to send it out over the ethernet... and since it's a local lan, it can't find mips.com. However if I try uupath (I collect the maps and update the pathalias database regularly), it correctly rewrites the address to: mips!jim%foobar If I use this as the mailing address, it correctly goes out over the uucp link to mips. From what I can tell the address rewriting rules test for the presense of the bang (!) to tell if it's a uucp address. If it is then it uses uucp and uupath. In a similar fashion there is a test for "@", which means it goes over the ethernet. Question: Why doesn't sendmail use uupath to rewrite the address, and then test to see if there's a bang in the path? Is there a good reason not to do this? Has anyone done this? Do you know of any other HP-sendmail problems? Yes, I've enabled sendmail. (change to executable) Yes, I've enabled the use of uupath within sendmail.
