[comp.sys.hp] Compatibility of HP 9000/825 and 9000/300

keith@sequoia.UUCP (Keith Pyle) (02/21/90)

The scenario is as follows: we have an HP 9000/825 running HP/UX
Release A.B3.10.2A and one part of our organization is considering the
acquisition of an HP 9000/300 workstation, also to run HP/UX. We have
been told that the two machines are essentially the same and that the
OS is also essentially the same. Presumably, the worst case is that we
will have to recompile our applications and generate new executables.

Does anyone have experience with both of these machine which would support
or refute these claims?

Please e-mail replies to me and I will forward them to the appropriate
parties. Thanks in advance.

Two thoughts on portability you might consider:

	1. Make sure both the S300 and the S800 are using the same
release. In your case this should be release 7.0. Otherwise,
comparisons between these machines will be confused. There are
a lot of differences between release 3.1 and release 7.0 on the
	S800, for example.

	2. For language differences on the two machines check out the
HP-UX Portability Guide for HP 9000 Series 300/800 Computers, HP
Part number 98794-90046. It should be available from your local
HP sales rep. NOTE: It frequently goes into gory detail -
don't be intimidated by its size. The differences are generally
in corner cases and in language extensions to support programs
from other companies (lots of extensions for this purpose). C
and FORTRAN are quite portable between the systems whereas
Pascal is somewhat less so. Some information is also available
	for system calls, etc.

Hope this helps.
