[comp.sys.hp] 7.0 update: well done HP !

edwin@ruuinf.cs.ruu.nl (Edwin Kremer) (03/12/90)

I did the upgrade to 7.0 on our HP9000/370 (a cluster server with 30
diskless clients) last weekend and I'd like to make HP a compliment:
doing the upgrade was a real pleasure, you guys at HP did a great job!

If you haven't done the upgrade yet, it's hard to tell what makes it
so smooth, but allow me to pick this tiny detail: as the update notes
tell you, the format of the "{b,u,w}tmp" files has changed. During the
update, the 6.5 version of these files are nicely converted to the new
7.0 format. I can easily think of another vendor who would handle such
as:
"The format of the utmp/wtmp files had changed. Please remove
old versions of these files and re-create them with the right
	 permissions." ;-) ;-)

[Note: the ";-)"'s are most obviously not added by the vendor]

By the way, talking about the new utmp format: I appreciate the "ut_host"
field in struct utmp, but why doesn't "who" show it to you???? (I did RTFM
and I also tried all options to "who", but... and YES, there were really
some remote logins and YES, an "od /etc/utmp" showed that the entry actually
contained a host name...)

		thanks for your time,
