Tom, Of the three possible problem causes you mentioned, the one that makes the most sense is the dead floppy drive. It shouldn't really be a problem, though. Anyway, if you feel like messing with this some more, after the installation dies you can take the target disk, mount it on another system (probably have to fsck first), and look at the file "/tmp/update.log". It MAY provide a clue as to what happened. The other thing of interest would be a complete list of the files on that disk. It would show how far into the process you got.
