Is anyone using the Laser-ROM version of manuals and SSB's for HP-UX (or MPE, for that matter)? My company is considering purchase for our 825, and we want to hear about other companies' experiences. Specifically: 1. Is Laser-ROM best used as a supplement to the printed manual set, or can it REPLACE one or more of the manual sets? 2. When will Laser-ROM become a distribution media for HP-UX software updates? How does/will the speed of update via Laser-ROM compare to mag tape or 9144? Any comments and/or subjective opinions will be appreciated. brian

Printed manuals aren't updated very often because the printing cost is prohibitive. Also, Laser-ROM has keyword search! Have you seen a demo? Visually, it looks just like the printed manual. I would guess that printed manuals will go the way of the slide-rule. With a lot of people fighting it all the way. >2. When will Laser-ROM become a distribution media for HP-UX software >updates? As for speed, unless your 9144 is a heck of a lot faster than mine .... :-) After all, Laser-ROM is a disk - a bit slower, but still a disk. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dan Herington danh@hpindda.HP.COM (408) 447-2849 HP Information Networks (43LK) 19420 Homestead Rd. re: > 2. When will Laser-ROM become a distribution media for HP-UX software > updates? As soon as possible, but no earlier than 8.0, (although third parties can distribute at 7.0 on CD, because they don't require boot/install). > How does/will the speed of update via Laser-ROM compare to mag tape or 9144? About as well as you'd expect for 1000x faster seek and 5x faster transfer rate. It is too convienent to have 4 manuals/book open that don't obscure each other. Also how much room is left on one the current disk? What happens when its full? (The answer is spend money !!!). > >-------------------------------------------------------------------------- >Dan Herington danh@hpindda.HP.COM (408) 447-2849 >HP Information Networks (43LK) 19420 Homestead Rd.
