We currently have two HP9000/320s, each of which have a hp 300h monochrome monitor as the console device, and a hp98710 color monitor as an additional graphics device. X11 is running on the 300h, but is there any way that color X will run on the 98710? The manual implies that it will run on the 98720 and 98730, but no mention of the equipment we have. The HP 98700A/H, now discontinued, is the oldest bit-map display on the
Series 300 (and was actually designed for an earlier computer line). There
never was any X-server code for it, and none is planned. Part of the reason
no server code exists is that the 98700A processor was optimized for vector
operations, and raster-op performance was not considered adequate for
X-windows.
If you aren't otherwise using the transform engine features, you could keep
the CRT monitor and replace the 98700A processor and 98287A interface with a
98547A or 98549A video board. Both are supported by X11 and would provide
improved raster-op performance.
